Alpmuseum uf m Tannberg, Schröcken

“This mountain pasture (‘alp’) has been preserved just as it was when it was once inhabited and cultivated. One could move back in there tomorrow and begin making cheese again.”

Edwin Schwarzmann has lots of stories to tell his visitors to the Alp Museum ufm Tannberg, in his home village of Schröcken. The Alp Museum in the old “Batzen Sennalp Dairy” was opened in 2002 during the “International Year of Mountains” – 400 years after the logging of the first spruce trees, used to build the original Walser dairy, 200 years after its renovation to become the “Bregenzer Wald Batzen Sennalp Dairy”, and 100 years after the last year-round occupants left for good the former permanent settlement 1,570 meters above sea level.

The Museum, a protected historic landmark, offers an inside view of the life and work of mountain farmers many years ago. In the exhibition dairy, with its old equipment and utensils housed in the low-ceiling living room, in the hayloft (where up to ten persons spent their nights together), in the stables, and cheese aging cellar 400 years of cultural history come alive again.  The Alp Museum pays reverent homage to the life and times of earlier generations; it memorializes the work traditions of alpine farming, the richness of a traditional culture based on the farming of mountain pastures, and the ecological plentifulness of the Tannberg region.
