The Bezau Cultural Heritage Museum, located in a typical Bregenz Forest farming house, offers insights into rural family life and living conditions in the 18th century, with an emphasis on the historical significance of wooden architecture for the region. Even before the First World War Anna Katharina Feuerstein, the founder of the Bezau Cultural Heritage Museum, began to present her stiff opposition to the sell-off of irreplaceable local and regional cultural assets. In 1918 she purchased House No. 181 in the Bezau town neighborhood of Ellenbogen, which she donated two years later to the newly founded Local Heritage Protection Association.
Exhibits in this historic landmark include a perfectly preserved kitchen, living room, and master bedroom – called a “Gado” in the Bregenz Forest dialect. Also displayed are a collection of
all
Bregenz Forest folk costumes, a valuable selection of sacred art, a picture gallery of well-known personages from the Bregenz Forest region, and topics focusing on customs, traditions and popular religion and beliefs. In the so-called embroidery room, the history of chain stitch embroidery in the Bregenz Forest is presented.
