    The Kanisfluh is one of the most striking mountains in the Bregenzerwald. The rocky north side is visible from the valley, the southern slopes are green and sunlit. It offers the ideal habitat for ibex as well as for 930 different species of butterfly. The first part of the hike is easy-going, and follows an agricultural path. After you have passed the Kanis alp, the ascent begins on a narrow path which takes you to the top of the Kanisfluh. To descend, take the Wurzachalpe option back down to the mountain station.

    Geologisch betrachtet befindet man sich im Alpgebiet von Mellau in der Zone des Helvetikums. Es handelt sich dabei um Jura-Kalkgesteine aus der Kreidezeit. Der gesamte Kanisfluhstock ist ein Großraumbiotop bestehend aus verschiedenen Laubwäldern, Kalkrasen und Felsfluren in dem auch sehr viele Arten von Schmetterlingen vorkommen.

    Wortherkunft: Im Jahr 1340 wurde die Bezeichnung “Kalendis” urkundlich verwendet, ein Name der aus Graubünden bekannt ist. Der Name “Fluh” ist das alemannische Wort für “Felswand” und weist auf die steile Felsflanke im Norden hin.

    Eine Sage berichtet dagegen von einem Einwanderer aus dem Schweizer Kanton Wallis aus der Zeit um 1400 namens Casinio. Bevor er seine Braut aus seiner Heimat nachholen konnte, war sie verstorben und er brachte in trauriger Erinnerung einige Stöcke Edelweiß von ihrem Grab mit und pflanzte sie an den Hängen der Holenke. Kanisfluh soll von dem Namen Canisio abgeleitet sein.

    At the end of a leisurely stretch between the mountain station of Roßstelle and the Kanisalpe, you start the ascent to the Kanisfluh. In addition to a breathtaking panoramic view, with a bit of luck you will also catch sight of ibexes. On the way back to the mountain station, you pass the lovely Wurzachalpe.
